What’s a fisherman’s life like in the wilderness of the Bazaruto archipelago? With Mozambique beaches for a backdrop, the day starts with fish catching and ends with tasting some of the world’s best seafood – cooking fish on a Dhow boat to make fresh tuna curry.
My name is Vanasio. We are going now to the Bazaruto Archipelago. We’re going to go from here to Banque Island. It’s going to take us 2 hours to get there. And from there we will get to Magaruque Island – another hour to get across there.
It is a national park which looks after the wildlife on the island. Bazaruto is also looked after by the WWF. There are animals such as crocodiles, and lagoons where the crocodiles mate, birds, monkeys, baboons, giraffes and lions as well which were put in the park. It’s a really protected place.
This is one island of the Bazaruto Archipelago – Banque Island. It’s about one square kilometer.
This is Banque Island. Fishermen come here every day to fish and take it to the mainland to sell it. People on the mainland buy it so they can eat fish from Banque Island.
All these weeds that you can see growing here are cement. The plant has these seeds. The seeds smell of the plant.
From Banque Island it’s possible to see Magaruque Island. It’s another part of the archipelago.
Now we are together with the fishermen on Banque Island. They are cooking maize, which is corn. It’s made with millet. The fish are small kingfishes. They’re making themselves lunch so they can eat and taste the fish.
This is the Bazaruto Archipelago. This is the main archipelago. This is Two Mile Reef, which people from all over the world come to for snorkeling. And we have Pansy Island, where you can find pansy shells. This is a pansy shell. It comes from that island. It has a star in the middle.
We’re going to the fishermen now. They’re still fishing. This is one of their boats. There’s a fisherman onboard. We’re on our way to find some more fishermen on our way to the next island, which is part of the mainland.
These fishermen here are carrying ropes – similar to this one. They have a rope with a net. They are waiting for that boat to come around to bring extra people to help them pull. The tide is lower now, so the fishermen are now starting to fish.
This is a rapala, and we’re going to try to fish using it. The kinds of fish we might find are barracuda, kingfish, tuna. He’s putting it in the ocean and he’s going to try to catch a barracuda. Drop the line! We’re going to try now. We’re going to catch a fish!
This is barracuda that’s been cooked in this pot here. This is the millet that’s been cooked in this pot here. This is barracuda fish that was caught in the Bazaruto Archipelago – the fisherman is giving it to us for lunch. And this is millet – the pulp of millet meal – made from corn. Now I’m going to taste the barracuda. I’m testing that it is barracuda. It has a different taste – it’s not really like barracuda. Yes it has a different taste, this is tuna. It has a totally different taste, it’s still good. Barracuda and tuna have different flavours. Barracuda has a typical fishy taste, whereas tuna, which is equally as good, tastes more like steak.
This is the main coral reef from Magaruque Island. There are plenty of fish here. Lots of foreigners come to snorkel here. This is the main site of the Bazaruto Archipelago – all the wildlife of the ocean is here.
This is the main reef. This is the dolphin safari on the Bazaruto Archipelago – they will take you snorkeling.
This is everybody from the island. All these people. They are catching fish. They’re pulling the net out. We’re close to them. They’re taking the net out. This is everybody from the island. They’re catching fish with a fishing net. Now they’re coming out of the sea, they’ve pulled the net out. And here’s the fish. This is what the fishermen – the community of the island – caught today. They caught all these fish. You can see that some of them are bigger fish, which is tuna, and some of them are small ones – small kingfishes and tuna. The whole community from the island is here.
Tuna is a huge fish – very heavy. It can be 7 or 8 metres.
We bought some fish from the local people who caught them on the Bazaruto Archipelago and we’re bringing them to the mainland to sell. We’ll sell the fish on the mainland to other locals.
